The ABB Group was formed in 1988 as a result of the merger of two large companies in the power engineering industry, whose roots go back to the 19th century: ASEA (Allemana Svenska Elektriska Aktienbolaget), a Swedish company existing since 1883, and BBC (Brown Boveri Company, originally Brown Boveri & Cie), a Swiss company existing since 1891.
